- Free WiFi is rare—except at Starbucks or some malls.
- eSIM: Digital SIM activated via WiFi. Mobimatter is great—you can monitor and top up via their app. mobimatter.com
- Pocket WiFi: Portable device with unlimited data, shareable, needs charging. Pick up at the airport or ship to address. Return by mail or airport box with their envelope. Japan Wireless is one provider that has worked well.
🚆 Getting Around
- IC Cards: Suica / Icoca / Icoca app—tap to enter and exit trains. If underfunded, you can still enter but must top up (usually with cash) before exiting.
- Info desks are available at most gates.
đź’° Money
- Most places take cards, but transport cards and vending machines need cash.
- 7-Eleven ATMs usually offer the best exchange rates.
🍱 Food
- Vending Machines: Mostly drinks, need 100/500 yen coins. New 500-yen coins don’t always work.
- Convenience Stores: 7-Eleven & Family Mart have decent food.
- Grocery Stores: Great for picnic meals—just note trash cans are rare, so bring a bag.
- Restaurants: Found at top/bottom of malls. Full meals can be around ÂĄ1,000
🎒 Luggage
- Most hotels/hostels can send your luggage to another city (same-day).
